  • Bentley Drops ACIS

Bentley Systems announced Oct 16 that it licensed EDS’s Parasolid technology to become the core solid modeling
technology in MicroStation Modeler, MicroStation/J, and ModelServer. Bentley says this means "the technology will
soon populate over 200,000 desktops and service many times more desktop clients through Java and server
products." Shipment begins early in 1998 with Modeler, which will be compatible with the current ACIS-based
    version.

Bentley Systems president Greg Bentley said they made the switch from Spatial Technology's ACIS because
"Parasolid has become the standard for high-end solids modeling technology."

It is interesting to note that Bentley plans to use Parasolid to extend solids modeling to its architectural
    software, Triforma.

What Can Java Do for CAD?

JP Margenthal has these thoughts on the usefulness of Java for CAD software, as written in Engineering Automation
    Report, Sept'97:

Java is not useful for writing a complete CAD system because (1) the entire code must be available at one time,
which rules out Java applets; and (2) CAD software has pretty much migrated to Windows NT, negating the need for
Java's ability to run on any platform and network devices. Instead, Java is useful for:

Bentley Systems is the first CAD vendor to begin incorporating Java, with MicroStation/J. JP Margenthal sees
the following application: instead of translating CAD drawing files, independent Java applets replay the
instructions used to create a model in the new modeling environment.

    ModelServer Publisher Gets Java-based Redlining

A Java-enhanced version of ModelServer Publisher contains a Java engineering applet for redlining. (ModelServer
Publisher is the first server software to dynamically publish live engineering drawings on demand to standard Web
browsers.) The software is now the first to allow redlining of drawings from Web browsers.

The new version of ModelServer Publisher includes database publishing in HTML format, a new Java viewing
applet, and support for AutoCAD R14 DWG files. STEP files are due to be supported in the future. The software will be
available by year's end. More info from http://www.bentley.com

    Microsoft Unlawful, Says US DOJ

The American Department of Justice says Microsoft broke the agreement made between the DOJ and Microsoft in
1995. DOJ says Microsoft forced computer vendors to distibute its Internet Explorer as a condition of being allowed
to bundle Windows 95. The DOJ is looking for a fine of US$1 million per day of non-compliance. In addition, the
DOJ is asking the court to nullify NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) other companies have with Microsoft, so that
they can freely talk to DOJ without notifying Microsoft.

In unrelated news, Sun and Microsoft have each posted their confidential Java licensing agreement on the Internet
in order to garner grass-roots support for their side of the law suit, where Sun is seeking US$35 million plus damages
and costs from Microsoft for violating the agreement.

More bad news will come next week. October 28 has been designated "Bill Gates Ping Day" (his birthday) by the
Purple Ribbon Campaign. The Campaign has asked all Internet users to ping Microsoft servers on that day.

    DataCAD v8 Due in March'98

DataCAD 8 for Windows 95/NT is due to ship March 1'98 and will include DataCAD 8 for DOS and DC Viewer v1.0. DataCAD 8
for Windows 95/NT uses the same drawing files, templates, symbols, fonts, linetypes, hatch patterns and layer files as
DataCAD 8 for DOS. DataCAD 8 reads DataCAD 5, 6, and 7 drawing files.

Improved Multi-scale Plotting is improved to allow a name for each of the possible 256 sheets per drawing. 3D
GotoViews can now be used as details. Any detail can be read out to the drawing window for further editing or updated in
one step based on the current view.

To see DataCAD 8 first-hand, attend the Ten Year Anniversary of DBUG (DataCAD Boston Users' Group) at Build
    Boston Nov 19'97.

We Bought a CAD Company. Now What?

When IMSI purchased all of Corel's CAD products (plus several other graphical software packages) for US$5.3
million last month, IMSI ended up with a CAD orphan: Visual CADD.

At one time, this software package was supposed to sell 350,000 copies to Generic CADD users, plus others. When it
became apparent that sales were well below expectations (one figure we heard was 25,000 copies), Corel took over the
marketing and distribution from Numera Software. Eventually, the Visual CADD source code was also sold to Corel. We can
only guess that Corel also found CAD sales uninspiring and sold to IMSI.

Now IMSI has two $500 2D CAD packages: TurboCAD and Visual CADD. What to do? We have no idea what IMSI's plans
are but here are the options we see:

Option 1. Sell Visual CADD as a high-end 2D design product (US$1,000 or more). Increasing the price from US$495 to
US$1,995 seems to have worked for CadKey.

Option 2. Market Visual CADD as a parallel product to TurboCAD, like Tide-Bold detergent and Dodge-Plymouth mini-
    vans.

Option 3. Make use of some of Visual CADD's unique features, such as its Web DLL and VB API.

Option 4. Sell it again or orphan it -- a pity, since its lineage goes back to 1985, when Generic CADD v1 came out at US$99.

    Book Review by Ralph Grabowski

Visual Basic Programmer's Guide to Web Development
    by William Martiner

If you like the Microsoft approach to programming, here is an excellent book for creating a dynamic Web site using
Visual Basic 5 and Visual InterDev. The book covers the following topics:

Martiner's style is easy to read. Here's a sample: "You see, if you simply define properties for ActiveX controls through
Property Get and Let procedures, you might find yourself in the unpleasant situation of having a control with 'magic
disappearing properties.'" Although the book does not contain the now-mandatory CD-ROM, you can get all the sample
    codes and demos from http://www.wiley.com/compbooks/martiner

    List price: US$34.99; 460pp; paperback.

    Letters to the Editor

"I find myself reading [upFront.eZine] avidly each Tuesday. It consistently contains a nicely focused package of
entirely relevant and topical information that I frequently reference in various conversations in the work world, as
well as in my duties as an AutoCAD tutor at the local community college. Please keep up the great work."

    Notable Quotable

"Unlike Microsoft, which would go out and build its own chopsticks, claiming that they're better than the ones I
have now, Sun would go out and develop a fork."
